After a wonderful summer sailing around the Southern Caribbean islands we arrived safely back in the BVI.
It has been a busy couple of months, from renewing work permits, taking care of Léna who has now found her feet and is running all over the place, working back to back charters, catching up with friends on the island and having family come to visit. I have finally found a moment to myself to catch up with my blog.
This season both my parents and Gavin’s parents have very kindly agreed to come and stay for 3 months each to take care of Léna whilst I go back to work with Gavin and make a little money again after a very tough year last year. Aside from topping up the bank balance, it has also given me time to go back to work and feel a little bit like me again. However much I love being a mum and adore spending every single moment with Léna, it is so nice to have some freedom to do my own thing occasionally with help from the grandparents taking care of her.
Léna is almost 17 months old and has become a very smart, beautiful, independent little girl. Watching her grow is the most amazing sight to see. She is walking, feeding herself, is very strong willed, loves to dance, plays on the beach and we cannot get her out of the ocean. She has definitely turned into the water baby we were hoping for. Our island baby is growing up and it is so wonderful to have our parents here with us watching her develop into a free spirited toddler.
Gavin and I started our first charter back in October and have had some really great guests already this season. After taking a year off from work, going back to 16 hour days, 7 days a week were definitely a shock to the system. However, adjusting to life back on the water was pretty simple and we are back in the swing of things. Working away from Léna is really tough for me and I ball my eyes out every time I walk out of the door, but I’m hoping she will become a little more independent and I love to see her bonding with my parents. It is great to be working with Gavin again and so nice to spend time together.
It is now a year after Hurricane Irma hit and after a slow and steady season last year, this season is looking up. With cruise ships coming in almost daily, charter companies back up and running, hotels, bars and restaurants rebuilt, the BVI is looking great and will hopefully be back to what it once was in no time.
Gavin and I recently returned from 14 days out on charter. Both weeks were very busy group charters and tandem trips with multiple boats. When we finally got home we couldn’t wait to spend some time with the family and just relax. Gavin and I booked ourselves in for a spa treatment the moment our feet touched the dock, completely zoned out and drifted into relaxation.
On our days off we have been spending time out on the sea on our own little vessel and have been taking the family out on fishing trips and beach days.
Christmas is approaching quickly and once again we are working as it is the busiest time of year for us. I’m hoping next year we will get to spend this festive time of year together as a family, but for now we will be celebrating Christmas next week and will watch Léna open her presents early.
We are looking forward to a New Year and many more adventures in the near future.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
